Brief History of Farmington
The Farmington Community had its beginnings in the early 1960s with the construction of the first few homes and the filing of the deed covenants that established the identity and character of the Community. Mr. Don Cleckley, President of Cedar Park Corporation, was the developer of the Farmington Community.
Shortly after development began, the Farmington Recreational Association was formed with the stated purpose of building a neighborhood pool and other recreational facilities as might be desired by the members. For several reasons, the facilities were never built and the Association dissolved in 1975.
The Community has slowly evolved in design and construction. Today, the Farmington Community contains more than 477 homes with a population of approximately 1,500 residents. There are a total of seventeen (17) sections. There is a strong spirit of harmony and commonality of purpose in the attitude of all residents. Our community is well defined, and as such, we understand that each resident bears a responsibility to other residents and that their activities have an impact on others. The ongoing median beautification program that is carried out by the volunteer Garden Club exemplifies this point.
In the fall of 1990, the residents formed the Farmington Civic Association, with the stated purpose to promote and encourage a better community and civic spirit, and to foster goodwill and friendship among all residents. On January 14, 2002, Farmington earned the status of a City of Hampton registered neighborhood. This designation affords us preferential treatment from the Hampton Neighborhood Office for obtaining grants to accomplish goals and objectives. In 2013, the Farmington Civic Association was approved as a registered neighborhood organization and presented with recognition certificate.
Association newsletters are published and distributed quarterly. The content includes articles from the FCA President, Garden Club, Youth Board, Newsletter coordinator, and others who may have relevant information to share. Classified ads are accepted at a modest fee to help defray the cost of publishing the newsletter. Additionally, the association maintains this web page as another means of communicating with residents of Farmington.
Over the years, Farmington has hosted a golf tournament, teen blast, National Night Out, an annual picnic, and recognition of high school graduates. The FCA has brought in special guests to speak at the general membership meetings and hosted chats with city officials to discuss neighborhood issues. At the September 2017 general membership meeting, the City of Hampton Mayor, Chief of Police, and Commonwealth Attorney were all present to answer questions from FCA members.
